Original Description:
When someone talks about a textual difference in the New Testament, the reaction should not be "I've never heard of that before!" or "That's not in my King James Version of the Bible, but rather the reaction should be: "What was originally written by the evangelist Matthew?"  At Matthew 27:35 the earliest and best texts do not support the addition of “that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they... cast lots, ” which is derived from the parallel at John 19:24, which itself was inspired by Psalm 22:18.  The omission of this later addition is strongly supported by the Greek Codex Sinaiticus, the Greek Codex Alexandrinus, the Greek Codex Vaticanus, the Greek Codex Bezae, other Greek uncials, Greek minuscules, Old Latin manuscripts, Jerome’s Latin Vulgate (as seen here, in the 3rd scanned image, left column, near the bottom), the Sinaitic Syriac, the Syriac Peshitta, the margin of the Harclean Syriac, the Middle Egyptian, and the Church father, Eusbius of Caesarea.  Also, Bruce M. Metzger,  A Textual Commentary on the Greek New Testament, p. 69, says: “The committee was impressed by the absence of the passage from early witnesses of the Alexandrian and the Western types of text . . . and the likelihood that copyists were influenced by the parallel passage in John 19:24.”
A very rare and large leaf in Black Letter (Gothic) type from a Latin VulgateBible published in Venice in 1483 by the printer, Johannes Herbort deSeligenstadt.  It is outstanding edition of the Latin Bible, one of theFontiubus ex Graecis editions, "a series of corrected Latin Bibles, whichclaim for themselves--apparently with justice--a superiority above allcontemporary edition, " according to Darlow and Moule, vol. II, p.911.  This edition had numerous additions by Franciscus Moneliensis andQuintius Aemilianus.  This is just twenty-eight years after Gutenberg's1st Bible of 1455!   By definition, an incunabulum (the singularof "incunabula") or "incunable" (French) or"inkunabel" (German) must be printed from 1455 to1500.  However, those books printed in the later 1480s and the 1490s, as well as the year 1500 (which is technically the last year of the 15thcentury), had more and more woodcut printed initials.  In Latin, theterm "incunabula" means "baby clothes" or "things ofthe cradle, " and can refer to the earliest stages or first traces in thedevelopment of anything.    This leaf has rubrication doneall by a scribe's own hand in red ink, and yellow ink; there are scoresof marks, underlinings, and flourishes on this leaf.  The colors arestrong and fresh-looking, on both sides of the leaf.  Since versification on the Bible was not done until 1551, there are no verses on this leaf, but instead there are sections, which can be seen in the margin.  This leaf contains Matthew 27:8--28:20.  The size ofthe sheet is about 8 in. x 11 in.    This leaf has three (3) largehandwritten initial letters: two of them using pink and green ink, and one of them using blue ink.
We need to put into context thework of Christian scribes during the 1, 400 years before Gutenberg’s 1455 inventionof printing with movable type.  During these centuries scribes developedtwo kinds of abbreviations in the manuscripts that were copied andre-copied.  The first kind of abbreviation was the shortening orabbreviation of very common words, so that it was easier and quicker to writesuch frequently occurring words.  These do not concern us here.  Thesecond kind of abbreviation was for the words held sacred by Christians. In the Latin tradition, and especially in Jerome’s Latin Vulgate text, thesewere called “Nomina Sacra" meaning "Holy Names.”  To Christianswriting the New Testament the word “Lord” usually referred to “The Lord JesusChrist.”  This leaf has eleven instances of the Nomina Sacra or Holy Name for the word "Lord, "in which the Latin word "Dominus" is abbreviated to “dns”and a line is placed above the “n” to indicate that this is a Nomina Sacra.  There are also seven instances of the Nomina Sacra for "Lord" in the form of "dns"; also, there are two instances of the Nomina Sacra for "Christ" in the form of "xps."Thewinner of this eBay auction will receive the original leaf from the 1483 LatinBible, as well as a xerox copy of the Latin text, with each of these marked (seethe last scanned image), with the marks made by someone who has a Ph.D.in Biblical Studies, received from the University of Birmingham in Birmingham, England.  This is an absolutely amazing leaf of an incunabulaBible.

Bibliographic description in Frederick R. Goff, "Incunabula in AmericanLibraries, " as # B-579.  The sheet of paper from the 1483 LatinVulgate Bible is in good condition, but does show some light browningdiscoloration, especially around the edges,  due to its age and use overthe centuries.     An impressive early incunabulaleaf.    This is an original 15th century printed Biblepage, not a reproduction.  It authenticity is 100% guaranteed.
