Here is an exceptional piece of Canadiana, a rare HBC Commissioned Buckskin? Victorian Wall Pocket. The embroidery and materials appear to suggest Plains Indian construction, the precise date is unknown, but wall pockets were a popular Victorian artifact, so it could be early 20th century. However, it may be even earlier.
There appears to have been a silk backing that has separated over time; this likely had some means to hang it on the wall. Due to its excellent condition, th...is item looks like it may have been commissioned by HBC as a gift for a notable recipient, but then it may have seen little usage, and it was likely just stored away. It has been folded in half in storage, and thus has a slight ‘memory fold’ to the hide. A very fine piece of Hudson’s Bay Company history!
