Scarce 18th Century Figural Flint Striker (circa 1750-1790)What a great form on this period strike-a-light, as you can see the formation of the design is a Sea Serpent with great attention to detail on the formed in mouth, eyes, gills and the long curled tail that makes up the handle area.
We have seen only a handful of this formation in out of hundreds of flint strikers we have bought and sold over the decades. This example was purchased out of a New England Lighting Collection that wa...s assembled decades ago from a collector who focused on 17th and 18th century lighting. Flint strikers were used with small amounts of tinder to create a flame. A piece of flint would have grazed the underside steel edge. Most commonly strikers are a "C" or oval shape, but on occasion one can find a figural example.
