I have no idea what exact tribe or region that it comes from but just a little look around the inter-web makes me think it is from Congo, Nigeria or Cameroon?
Was from the estate of artist John Beauchamp. He was a UMN art teacher for a few years and traveled the world as an artist. He is in the Whitney and the Walker. It's always the Modern art guys that love tribal masks, brings out their inner-Picasso... or something like that. He ran in some heady circles and hung out in Paris, this could have come from one of those 2 sources?
I have no idea when it was made but it definitely looked, felt and smelled older than some of his other stuff. I'm guessing the 1950s? Maybe a bit older or new but def has age as you can see that even the repairs were done a good while ago.
I have no idea of the value but have seen similar ones at Sotheby's and Bonham's selling for tens of thousands of dollars.
IT DOES SEEM TO HAVE A FEW REPAIRS. THERE IS A HOLE ON THE TOP OF THE HEAD WHERE ANOTHER PIECE MAY HAVE GONE? THERE ARE SHEET METAL PIECES ON THE INSIDE ND OUTSIDE OF ONE NECK HOLDING TOGETHER SOME OF THE WOOD. THE INNER METAL IS OLDER THAN THE OUTER. IT IS QUITE DUSTY AND THERE ARE VARIOUS KNICKS, AND SCRATCHES ON THE PIECE THROUGHOUT AND IT LOOKS LIKE THE JAW HAS HAD A FAIR BIT OF REPAIR ON IT AS WELL. I TOOK A BUNCH OF PICTURES OF THAT AREA FOR YOU BUT IF YOU'D LIKE MORE FROM THE INSIDE, JUST ASK.
It is about 19(ish) inches tall and 11(ish) inches wide. When it sits on its stand it's about 2ft tall. The stand has an old sticker number on it that says '1633' if that helps anyone identify it.
Happy to send more pictures if you need them, just message me.
