Very rare and original, ca1890’s Native American Blackfoot Indian Bead Decorated Hide Awl Case and Bone Awl.
This outstanding, late 20th century Plains / Blackfoot Beaded Awl Case measures approx. 11" long (including its buckskin drop) and features flap closure and two beaded rawhide drops at the top. The bead decoration is beautiful and well preserved and this rare Blackfoot Awl Sheath displays beautifully.
This wonderful, Black...foot Hide Awl Sheath / Case is sinew-sewn and made of a thick, stiff hide and beaded using colors of chalk white, red white heart, dark blue, pink, greasy yellow and pea green. The flap closure features a cross design and a delicate beaded border. That same beaded border is repeated on the buckskin drop at the bottom of the Case.
The Case came to us with what appears to be its original, bone Awl. The Awl fits the Case exactly and features a rich and warm, age appropriate surface patina as well as honest wear consistent with decades of use.
The Awl Case and Awl offered here are unconditionally guaranteed original and of the period. It is NOT a reproduction or modern recreation but an original Blackfoot Case crafted in the late 19th century. This very rare and beautiful, ca1890’s Blackfoot Indian Bead Decorated Awl Case is in very good condition. There is a small tear to the tip of the flap closure with an old, braided silk twine repair. There is also a tiny split at one edge of the flap hinge line. The lower 3 1/2” of the Case is more of a drop than a sheath as there is no internal substrate – the point where the substrate ends and this “drop” section begins is a bit “weak” but not damaged in any way. The beadwork is exceptionally beautiful and very well preserved with no loss, damage or repairs of any kind. The drops are intact and complete.
All elements of the Awl Case / Sheath are original and there has been no repairs or restorations other than that mentioned above. This wonderful Bead Decorated Hide Awl Sheath is 100% original and 100% beautiful.
