Vintage Matyo Hungarian Folk Embroidery Bird Butterfly Floral Fringe Shawl Tablecloth
This vintage Hungarian Matyo folk embroidery bird butterfly floral fringe shawl tablecloth dates from the 1920s. It is made of a black cotton fabric background covered with varying shades of brown, orange, yellow, blue and green silk threads done in raised padded satin stitch Matyo embroidery work. There is a fabulous flora and fauna flower vine leaf, birds and butterflies hand embroidered design ...with a colorful ombre silk hand knotted fringe trim surrounding it. This folk style matyo embroidery work is exquisitely done with wonderful workmanship and detail. Hungary's tradition of folk embroidery dates back to the middle ages. Hungarian daughters learned to embroider at a very young age and a family's wealth was often measured or determined by the number of embroidered cloths they had. This heavy large size square shawl, tablecloth measures 57 by 52 inches and has 9 inch long fringe. It is in good condition, with only a tiny mended repair on the side and near the center and a small area of missing fringe, all of which is difficult to see. This is a truly a rare and exceptional piece of Hungarian Matyo embroidered textile folk art!
