SCI-8Antique Buff & Berger TransitBuff & Berger Company(1871-1898), Boston, MA Transit with box in very good toexcellent condition with only the normal wear associated with its years of use.The transit has an “erect” 11” telescope, a 4 1/8” compass needle, and a 2 1/2”diameter ½ vertical Vernier circle. The dial and verniers are silvered in goodcondition. The dial has the points of thecompass marked along with the company name and serial number 1851. The paint onthe ...telescope is very well worn while the paint on the standards is not wornvery much. The telescope hairs could be a little darker, but the optics arevery good. The adjusting knob moves very freely. The upper and lower tangentscrews and knobs are in good working condition and the level vials arecomplete, full and functioning well. The transit has a 2 1/8” lens shade and thereis an adjusting pin in the box.The wooden box, 10” x 11” x 14 1/2”, is dovetailed and the leather strap has been replaced by a metal strap for ahandle. On the box is a Buff metal tagand on the inside of the box are Buff& Buff labels. Buff & Berger, 1971-1898, was apartnership between George L. Buff (1837-1923) and C. Louis Berger (1842-1922), founded on October 28, 1871 and dissolved on October 18, 1898. George Louis Buff went on to found andincorporate Buff & Buff Manufacturing in 1898. C. Louis Berger went on tofound C.L. Berger & Sons, Inc. with his two sons, William A. and Louis H.Berger on October 18, 1898 at 9 Province Court in Boston.What a wonderful antique brasstransit in very good condition to add to one’s collection, or a great starterfor a collection.
