Original Description:
SCI-53Early 19thCentury  13” Surveyor’s Compass by R.B.Bate, LondonThis ca. 1810 compass, 13” long, has a 4 3/4” nicelysilvered and engraved face in very good condition consistent with its age. Itis engraved “Bate, London” and has cardinal pointsin block letters and a highly detailed four point star. The needle ring is calibrated0-360 degrees. The compass does not have, nor did it ever have attached spiritlevels. It has 5 ½” sighting vanes without any calibrations o...n the sides of thevanes. The knurled thumb screws for attaching the vanes firmly to the compassare missing. There is a working device on the side of the compass ring forcontrolling the compass needle when it is not being used. The compass needlemoves very freely. Thecompass has a wooden mahogany dovetailed carrying case with a lock but ismissing its key. All of the wood blocks used to hold the compass in its caseare in place and solid with   feltcovered bottom. This has been instorage for quite awhile and it has never been polished. The original brass finishis in “old surface” but free from oxidation and it appears to retain its originalcoat of lacquer.  The carrying casedimensions are 13 1/2’ x 6” x 3” high. The box is in very good condition with awood sliver missing at one end. The inside of the box is very clean except forthe felt bottom. I believe the felt was added to the box and not original. R.B. Bate operated an optical andscientific business in London during the first half of the nineteenth century. He got hisstart in 1804, taking over the business of his uncle and father-in-law (one andthe same person), who had a commission to provide the government withhydrometers. Bate expanded the business to include microscopes and otheroptical equipment, plus a wide variety of other instruments. He was an optician, and so may have made at least the optical components of themicroscopes, etc. that he sold. In 1833, he served as Master of theSpectaclemakers’ Guild. He was also Optician in Ordinary to King George IV andQueen Victoria (i.e. he was an official optician to the Royal Household).
