MARE NOSTRUM (Our Sea) G PANERAI & Fo, Florence Face
(Original WWII Panerai Clock Face in a Swiss Clock - Presumably was slightly lathed down slightly to fit so well)
c. 1920's ~ 1940's movement, double mainspring, 15 jewels, by a quality Swiss maker.
This was a unique way for its first owner to retain a keepsake from WWII by swapping a clock face.
These clock faces are... extremely rare by a premier maker - most were destroyed during World War II.
See the Panerai dot com website (history page) for more info the their manufacture of timers for the Italian navy. https://www.panerai.com/ie/en/about-panerai/history.html
Also a photo about half way down this page of one of these timers in it's housing to compare with this one. Google Search: "Perezcope the mare nostrum prototype" first or second link on the results page https://perezcope.com/2016/06/16/the-mare-nostrum-prototype/
The clock movement is running beautifully and is accurate to less than a 1 minute over 3-4 days. Further tune-able by F/S lever of course.
The barometer is not functioning, the outer dial rotates with a black pointer on the edge of the glass.
The outer leather over metal case is missing the whole back covering and is very distressed as shown.
The watch is set by pulling out the winder. The glass screws off and the whole unit could be removed easily and fitted to a nicer display, case or holder.
Hands glow in the dark once charged with light.
441 g Overall Travel Clock Case: 112 x 183 58mm diameter face.
