Antique American Late 18th, Early 19th Century Formed Skewer Set Circa 1790-1830 with Great Heart Shaped Element! One of the finest examples of a early skewer holder I've ever had the pleasure of offering, fresh out of a Pennsylvania estate.As one can see the formation of the holder has two out strechting arms to support skewers, a top hanging hole beneath a heart shaped area and the great center adornment of a heart shape in the negative space. Please view the photographs for details of the p...iece!The black smith who made this piece was without questions a talented early artisan who choose to incorporate a popular design element into a functional hearth tool. Similar forms can be seen referenced in "Furniture Treasury: Also American Hardware and Household Utensils" by Wallace NuttingThe piece was found with three skewers, each with delicately formed in hanging loops with 'pig tail' ends on two of them, and a simplier hook shape on the smallest of the three. The holder itself measures a large 3 1/2" x 3 3/4".Skewers range is size from 6 3/4" to 7 3/4".Skewer sets were an important article of early hearthware. Using the pointed skewers to secure roasting meats, as well as to use the skewer's themselves in place of eating utensils. A piece such as this would have been placed at the mantle or near an open hearth fireplace to support cooking skewers on both of the two formed arms. This piece truly needs to be held in ones hand to fully appreciate its beauty.
