Great example of an article of early utilitarian folk art! This piece was acquired over a year ago from an estate of primitives and folk art offered by a local dealer. The estate was a collector who specialized in early ironware and folk art. There were several of th...is style kettle cover we were able to purchase and have since sold. This particular example is one of our favorites with the "handle" area being the formation of a Bird with a Great center negative space wing decoration. Also note the great addition to detail from the early blacksmith to the bird decoration in the form of the overall profile for the tail and again the "punched out" wing feathers design also a circle punched in eye work.
Additionally there is a series of linear circular designs that run the interior diameter of the cover with punched "star" designs between the borders though this is very faint in the images but can be seen on close inspection of the piece.
A cover such as this would have been placed on wrought iron kettles and deep reservior pans to during and more-so after the cooking process as a means to retain heat.
Underside has a bit more pitting than the top side from exposure to heat and cooking.
Scattered areas of pitting and blackening.
Measures 5 3/4" in diameter and stands just about 2 1/4" tall from the top of the bird to the bottom lid.
One of the the BEST examples of an early period pot lid out of a collection of them that took decades to assemble.
FIVE day auction, no reserve, .99 starting bid!
