HIGHLAND SPRINGS BREWERY SCENE ALE PORTER RUETER & ALLEY MISSION HILL BOSTON. The circa1880 factory scene is lithograph on paper. The Highland Spring Brewery was located 154-166 Terrace Street in the Mission Hill neighborhood of Boston. The brewery was founded in 1867 by Irish and German immigrants. They produced lagers, ales and porters. The original brewhouse was done in the Romanesque style. A second five story building was added in 1912 and was don...e in Georgian Revival architecture. The brewery closed during prohibition. After prohibition the brewery reopened as the Croft Brewing Company. Croft was acquired by Narragansett Brewing in 1952. Brewing ceased at this facility in 1953. The building was then acquired by R & S Pickle Works which produced kosher pickles. The pickle company was eventually purchased by Hebrew National and closed in the 1980's. Other companies that occupied the old brewery buildings were the Ditson Company, Theodore Presser Company, the Barb Company, Salem Press, and Graphique de France. The remaining buildings are listed on the Natinal Register of Historic Places.
This rare brewery factory scene is very reminisient of the Aesthetic movement art. There's incredible activity going on all over the print. Hercules holding up the bridge. A minstrel and a maiden holding a cup of beer. A railroad train carrying kegs of Highland Springs. HOrse drawn wagons carrying kegs of Highland Springs. An incredible primitive view In the upper left hand corner of what I'm guessing is the Mission Hill neighborhood. An image of the early 1860's brewery with the American flag flapping in the wind. And not to mention sprays of wheat and hop vines growing up the wooden frame of the image. The colors are bold and beautiful. Absolutely no fading or washout. The colors are as vibrant as the day it was printed.
The print has been professionally matted and framed. The dimensions are 34" X 29 1/2" with frame and the visible image is 28" X 24". The margins are completely intact and have not been trimmed. There are a couple of inch long separations that are mostly confined to the margins as noted in the pictures. They have been stabilized and do not detract from the print. There is some minor foxing in the lower left hand corner that is confined to the margin. If you're looking for an amazingly rare piece of breweriana this is it. Been in my collection for over 20 years. This is a masterpiece of early American lithography!!
