A mahogany wood case with brass fittings very early 20th century water & oil finder. The wood / glass box with window om top & side door is enclosing a circular opaque glass scale (I think it s glass) with central pin-pivot for the magnetized steel needle and inscribed with MANSFIELDS PATENT AUTOMATIC WATER FINDER Co., LIVERPOOL with scale sector annotated 70-0-70 degrees ...to far edges. The front/rear has a hinged flap to allow access for installing the pivoted steel needle. Comes complete with poor leather outer case, folding mahogany tripod and instruction papers titled 'The Mansfield patent Automatic Water and Oil Finders info & about the company itself, in fair condition. There is a pocket level but not a compass. The inside has a dial and a needle that shows either a negative or positive reading. It has a 3 legged stand and is constructed of the same wood & brass as the box. The bottom of the tripod legs have pegged feet for sticking into the ground. Size seems to be 7"x 7"x 11.25" high and the tripod legs are 24" to give you an overall height of roughly 34" to 30" depending how wide you spread the legs. LOOK CAREFULLY AT ALL PHOTOS TO JUDGE CONDITION.
