Original Description:
This is a wonderful, original document dated 1784, a very large vellum document, dated 1784, being a deed of property to Abraham Duryee, confiscated of  Benjamin Thompson, a fugitive and offender during the Revolutionary War, land confiscated under the Act of 1780.  Document states the land to be in Somerset, New Jersey, confiscated and sold by Peter Dumond, agent to the state. Signed at lower right by Peter Dumond and at left by Richard McDonald and Daniel Pervine. Sign...ed on back by Moses Scott and Abraham Duryee. Document is 20x28, vellum, folds, minor toning, else in overall good condition. Dr. Moses Scott (1738-1821)served as Chief Surgeon of the Continental Army Hospital in Piscataway. According to his grandson, Rev. William Warren Blauvelt, in a letter written about 1875, "He was acquainted with the Log College, often spoke of their ministers, and was himself an earnest Christian- long elder in the First Presbyterian Church, to which, as I have been told, he gave the lot on which the present church edifice stands. He was a surgeon in the Revolutionary Army - was at Brandywine - Trenton -Princeton.At the outset of the war, Scott joined the 2nd Regiment Middlesex Militia as a surgeon. A few months later, July 2, 1776, he was commissioned by the Continental Congress to be Physician-General of Military Hospitals. His rank was Surgeon,  and in 1777 he was appointed Surgeon of the Hospital and Assistant Director-General. He was in charge of General Hospitals in Morristown and New Brunswick. Scott was present at the battles of Brandywine, Germantown, Trenton and Princeton.  He was President and Treasurer of the Medical Society of New Jersey (the first in America), Fellow of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New York City, founding member of Somerset District Medical Society, Judge of the Inferior Court of Common Pleas, Somerset County; Justice of the Peace, Middlesex County; Elder, Trustee, Treasurer of New Brunswick Presbyterian Church.Please view the other historical and Civil War related documents I'll be listing this week.SEE SCAN.I now accept PAYPAL but PREFER other forms of traditional paper payment.
