Company History:TheBuffalo Brewing Company was incorporated in 1888 in Sacramento, California, and brewing began by 1890. The company was started byHerman Grau in Sacramento, bringing the successfulbrewing methods of Buffalo, New York. An ambitious brewery from thebeginning, Buffalo Brewing became among the largest beer operationswest of the Mississippi, with distribution throughout California, Nevada, Hawaii, and parts of Asia and Central America, even in Russiaand China. The company’s largest competitors oversees were theAnheuser-Busch Company and the Wm. J. Lemp Brewing Companies, bothbased in St. Louis, Missouri. The Buffalo Brewing Company became abranch of the Sacramento Brewing Company from 1897 to 1920. Two oftheir best selling beers were the ‘New Bru Export’ and the‘Bohemian Pale Export’. During prohibition (1920s) the BuffaloBrewing Company remained in business by producing soft drinks and“near” beer. When prohibition ended, they resumed selling beeronce again until the late 1940s when sales diminished and the breweryceased operation when national breweries controlled distributionchannels and choked regional and local breweries into extinction. However, in the 1970’s, two enterprising law school graduatesre-launched the Buffalo label in Sacramento.
