Up for auction is a seldom seen intact 18 piece WW2 Canadian Pacific Coast Militia Rangers (P.C.M.R.) grouping in excellent condition. This grouping was purchased from the fa...mily with another WW1 British Naval grouping (possibly his father Mr.Bee), please see my other auctions. Despite the rarity of some of these P.C.M.R. items I thought it would be better to keep them together as a group, so that a P.C.M.R. collector/museum could better appreciate and display them!
The grouping belonged to James Sutherland Christie Bee (K520690/k10458). What is unusual about the grouping is that it all came together, untouched, and that most P.C.M.R. items (such as badges and armbands) when found are without any provenance or other information. This would be an excellent research project! Aside from his P.C.M.R. cap badge, the group includes the desirable and hard to find P.C.M.R. lapel pin, as well as rare P.C.M.R. RANGER marked dog tags!
The grouping includes:
1. A P.C.M.R. (Pacific Coast Militia Rangers) cap badge in excellent original condition. Badge has a nice aged dark brown patina, attractive front design and complete with both prongs on reverse (several badges has holes for sewing in as opposed to lugs). Badge is correctly maker marked "VANCOUVER" and "PMP Ltd" for Pressed Metal Products Ltd.
2. Rare P.C.M.R. sterling silver Lapel pin, with identical design to the cap badge. The pin is in excellent condition, with a nice blackened metal patina, complete with original reverse fastener and maker marked "Pressed Metal Products Vancouver PMP STERLING"
3-4. Ultra rare P.C.M.R. set of 2 dog tags. The dog tags read:K620690 JC BEE RANGER CDN UN C
K10458 PTE.BEE JC U/C CDNIt would be interesting to research him with this information, as it appears his number changed during the war.
5. A photo of James Bee in 1930 as a child. The photo was found with the group in a small paper bag, with reads "Passport picture for coming to Canada- March 1930". The paper bag also includes other small personal effects not listed in this auction, which will be included with the lot. No photos of James Bee from his WW2 service were found with the grouping.
6. J.C. Bee's ring
7-8. Two General Service silver Canadian WW2 pins. Pins are complete with fasteners and reverse reads: 765288 and 477757. At least one of these would be J.C. Bee's service pin, I am unsure of the other pins origin.
**9. Canadian Soldier's Handbook, dated 1943. The book is crucial to the group as it includes his name as well as other information, including the various locations he was stationed at in the address section near the end (please see photos.)
10. WW2 Canadian Infantry Wedge cap, dated 1944 (size 7 1/4) and manufactured in Toronto Canada. The cap has a nice worn patina from use, is complete with original cap badge and buttons in good condition and has a clear C-> Broad arrow indicating Canadian military wartime issue. The hat appears to have a worn off soldiers serial number on the interior, although it is quite hard to read and doesn't appear to correspond with Pte Bee's own serial number. All of Pte Bee's items were found in this wedge cap in a large bag, this was likely his cap during training before joining to P.C.M.R.
11. Small pocketknife, maker marked on blade "Elrick Aberdeen" and engraved on front "MB" - The last letter representing the family name "BEE"
12. A 1980's Legion pin
13. A WW2-Korea era Canadian Veterans pin, with nice enamel work on front
14. A 75 years Legion medal, 1923-2001, unnamed
15-16. Two Pacific WW2 Canadian shoulder patches, in excellent condition.
17. A uncut pair of Infantry Corps tunic shoulder insignia
18. A uncut pair of "Canada" cloth shoulder titles
19. Nice crossed rifles WW2 patch in excellent condition

P.C.M.R. items, let alone named groups, are incredibly hard to find. This would be an excellent research opportunity for anyone interested in WW2 Canadian history and a P.C.M.R. veterans service- this would look excellent in display in any collection!

Some history on the P.C.M.R.:
They began as the Coastal Defence Guards and were finally recognized as the Pacific Coast Militia Rangers (PCMR). The PCMR were unique to the west coast of Canada and were formed in early 1942 to protect British Columbia (BC) and calm public unease over possible enemy activities. After the attack at Pearl Harbour and declaration of war against Japan, patrols of BC's rugged country appeared to be a necessity, one that could not be carried out by local militia forces, who were deemed more suited to populated areas.
Experienced men such as loggers, trappers, prospectors and ranchers were sought for this distinctive role. These men had knowledge of the local topography and terrain. Those who were close to populated centers were trained and employed in intelligence duties and local defence against minor raids at a local Ranger Training Camp. They were also instructed in tactical situations that included observation, especially coast watching against the possible Japanese invasion, anti-sabotage measures and protection of lines of communication and transportation. As these newly formed companies of PCMR were so geographically spread out, many could not attend a training camp. Those who did attend were also trained in methods of instruction. This enabled them to pass on information to their own personnel upon their return.
Training continued to be an issue and so it was determined that a training publication would have to be created in order to meet the needs of this widely dispersed force. "The Ranger, " as it came to be known, was issued on September 1, 1942 and was filled with useful information that every well-rounded Ranger should know, such as: "Know where to shoot", "Edible plants of BC", "Dig or Die", and "What can you do with a tarp?". Age was not necessarily a consideration in the enlistment of these rugged men.It was observed that, "young lads . . . in outlying areas were extremely valuable. Boys of 15 years and up proved to be good shots, could handle an axe, and were valuable as guides to city bred men." Even those considered to be too old to join the war effort were able to contribute to the protection of BC.The PCMR's early months were met with a distinct lack of supplies in appropriate clothing and weaponry. This changed, however, after the first Japanese Incendiary Balloons and a standard kit issue was developed to include: steel helmets, cloth "dry-bak" shooting hat, armbands, cloth "dry-bak" cruiser coat with shoulder straps, cloth "dry-bak" trousers and battle dress drill blouse with .303 rifles issued. Although the PCMR never engaged the enemy they played a crucial role in establishing a sense of purpose in those who were unable to go overseas for whatever reason.
Rural communities also gained a feeling of security knowing that there were able-bodied men on patrol at many of BC's remote locales. All in an effort to deter the potential invading marauders whether by air, land or sea.
Finally on September 30, 1945 at Brockton Point Oval, the PCMR were stood down. At the ceremony, Major General F.F. Worthington noted that, "the citizens of this country owe you a great debt of gratitude for the services you have rendered in the defence of their homes."

This would look great in any Canadian medal collection,   P.C.M.R. collection or general militaria display!
