You are bidding on a fascinating antique piece of medical equipment that was used to record blood pressure. This device is identified as Dr. Dudgeon's Sphygmograph and it comes in its original felt lined box (although the box has seen better days). This sphygmograph was designed in the late 1800's and was an improvement on the sphygmograph by Etienne Jules Marey in 1863. It was made by instrument maker J. Gauter in 1876. This sphygmograph attaches to the wrist ...(as seen in last two photos) and had a small piece of paper that recorded the pulse beat. This sphygmograph being auctioned has Dr. Dudgeon's name inscribed on the side as well as the name of Gauter at 19 Crawford Street. There is also London No. 192 in the bottom left. On the flat side of the instrument (where the names are written in script), I believe there is a small turning handle that is missing.
I cannot speak to whether it is functioning but truly an interesting piece for anyone in a medical field or who appreciates early medical devices and science instruments. It measures 2 1/4" across so quite small. A great item.
I use the US Postal Service and use priority mail to ensure quick delivery although size/weight can often be a deterrent due to a balloon fee on boxes over a certain size. Shipping costs are based on weight distance from my home in Fairhaven, MA. In simplest terms, I ship priority mail unless it is a book (then I ship using media mail) or if the item is bigger than a breadbox or heavier than 4 lbs (unless I can fit it in a flat rate box).
I've been selling on Ebay since 1998 but this is not a full time job.
