A Large Transit Theodolite In Case With Night Lamp - Troughton & Simms, London
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:126243 |
The large wooden case holds an 8" trough compass, lens erector tube with eye-piece for terrestrial viewing, 90 degree 'elbow' eye-piece, parafin lamp and holder. The middle axis mount of the telescope has a glass 'window' at one end which lines up with the 'window' of the lamp when in situ. The lamp aids the user of the instrument to observe objects & readings in poor light.
The aluminium support bar for the top bubble level is original to the instrument. Early 20th century transits / theodolites produced by Troughton & Simms had some parts manufactured in aluminium due to the sheer weight of these instruments. This piece is no exception weighing in at 8.8 kilos unboxed and just over 15 kilos boxed.
Strap to case is broken.
