This set includes an all-colors, final state woodblock print with two Dali signatures, one signature in the block within the image and the second signature being a complementary signature in red pencil in the lower margin by Dali, who commonly signed Di...vine Comedy woodblock prints during his stay at the St. Regis Hotel in NYC in the 1960s. This final-state original woodblock print is designated as an E.A. (expression of the artist). This print has a tape/adhesive abrasion verso from previous mounting.
The set also includes two original partial state woodblock prints: a single color woodblock print, and a plural color intermediate-state woodblock print, both unsigned.
All 3 woodblock prints are on BFK Rives paper. Important Note - The partial state woodblock prints are somewhat scarce since they were only included in lower number Dali Divine Comedy Suites, numbered 865 and lower.
Reference - pages 189-200 of "The Official Catalog Of The Graphic Works Of Salvador Dali" by Albert Field discuss the Dali Divine Comedy woodblock print suite. See especially page 192 which references Dali signing Divine Comedy woodblock prints (in red pencil for Hell, purple pencil for Purgatory, and blue pencil for Paradise) during his stay at the St. Regis Hotel. All 3 woodblock prints have been stored flat in a dark environment and retain full color intensity as when they were issued by Les Heures Claires in the early 1960s. IMPORTANT NOTE! THESE GENUINE ORIGINAL PRINTS PRODUCED FROM WOODBLOCKS BY LES HEURES CLAIRES IN THE EARLY 1960s should not be confused with the numerous Dali Divine Comedy reproductions (usually offset lithographs), some with reproduced or questionable "Dali" signatures, being offered for sale to un-informed buyers, which are basically worthless and should be avoided. In general, if a colored Dali Divine Comedy print is not positively stated to be a woodblock print (or woodcut print), it should be avoided. To produce each woodblock prints in a genuine Divine Comedy Suite, it usually required from 20 to 37 separate woodblocks to be carved, one woodblock for a single color of the print. The process is extremely labor intensive, which explains the long time frame (years) required to produce the entire Divine Comedy suite.
