ITALIAN - NEAPOLITAN SCHOOL 18thC - RELIGIOUS SCENE BY LAMARRA - INK - WATERCOLOR
Item History & Price
The present important drawing, executed in pen, ink, grey wash and watercolors on laid paper, depicts a religious scene, showing Saint Joseph, taking his son Jesus in his arms.
This drawing was squared for transfer and this way obviusly a preparatory study for a larger... scale painting. The shape of the drawing reveals that the final painting should have been an altarpiece for a church or monastery.
Authorship : the drawing is from the Italian-Neapolitan School. The only artist working in this specific technique in Naples (also using the colors, used in this drawing) was Francesco Lamarra. This way, seeing him as the atist of this drawing seems to be highly defendable.
