Original/Reproduction: Original | Era: 1900s |
The indicator was originally designed to use chemically treated paper that is only marked when it comes into contact with the brass stylus. Fourteen sheets of this paper, still working perfectly, are included with this unit. There was no ink, no pencils to sharpen, and no electricity used with this indicator. It is a marvel of the technology of the late 1800s. This treated paper can be replicated wi...th art materials readily available today.
The indicator is in perfect working order. It was used extensively, by Australian and USA engineers, in a California research and development project. The project was to develop solar thermal power plant, with thermal storage for overnight operation.
This engine indicator, Serial Number 18183, was used to analyse the performance of two of three engines made in California in 2012. The engines were designed to run on steam produced by concentrating sunlight on solar collectors. The solar collectors had an area of almost 1000 square metres. The solar collectors were installed near Waterford, in the central valley of California.
Most of the testing, using this engine indicator, was carried out using a gas-fired steam-generator. The work was carried out in Silicon Valley and funded by California based Venture Capitalists.
