This antique letter was passed down through the family of Captain John Abbot Jr.(1704-1793) of Andover, Massachusetts. I recently acquired a collection of 18th century letters and documents that belonged to Captain Abbot and this letter was among them. Captain Abbot was in the 6th Company of Colonel Samuel Johnson's 4th Essex Regiment during the Revolutionary War. This antique stampless folded letter is addressed to "Mr. Ezra Abbot, Andover." The three page letter is dated "Portl...and, 29 December 1798." The letter was written by John Abbot originally from Andover, Massachusetts, son of Captain John Abbot. John Abbot (III) had recently graduated from Harvard College and was now making his way in the business world. I am not sure exactly what Abbot's business was but it did include acquiring land and selling timber. The letter was written to his brother Ezra Abbot who was a farmer in Andover, Massachusetts. In this letter he tells his brother: "I am now waiting for an answer to a letter which I have lately written to Dr. Dwight, President of Yale College, respecting a contract, which he has proposed to make with me, to furnish materials for erecting a presidents house at New Haven. This business may probably delay me three weeks, after which, if nothing turns up to prevent, I hope to go on with Mr. Douglas if he should be well..." John Abbot goes on to tell his brother Ezra about other job prospects. This 221 year old letter is written in ink on a 6 1/4 x 7 1/4 inch sheet of hand laid paper. There is one small hole otherwise the letter is in very good condition! NO RESERVE!
