1865 Robinson ' S Patent Mechanical Photograph Album W/Spool Of Cartes De Visite
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:107280 |
Here's a rare Robinson's Patent Photograph Album -- ...a novel, somewhat large, and beautifully made Civil War era viewing apparatus manufactured in Cincinnati, Ohio by D. Millard & Co.
Condition is excellent throughout, and the viewer is completely original, including the windows, the knobs, the gilt lining, the key, the cabinet hinges, the small hardware, the spooled artwork, and the decorative white "gems" that adorn the rococo cabinet. The viewer works properly, and the images -- I believe there are 100 of them -- are in excellent condition, with no damage.
Each piece of artwork is affixed to the underside of the moving scroll, designed so the images can be removed and changed out. Graphics are full color and outstanding. The images are close to mint. Original manufacturer's instruction label is still affixed to the underside of viewer.
This is a really special piece that rarely turns up at all, much less in such pristine condition.
Measures approximately 10" x 7" x 5". Shipping weight approximately 7 lb.
The Leica camera seen in the last photograph is obviously not included in the auction. It is pictured solely for purposes of scale.
That's about it. Buyer prepays and includes shipping. Auction participants with no prior feedback or with hidden feedback should contact me before placing a bid. Thanks.
On Jul-18-19 at 04:07:40 PDT, seller added the following information:I've been asked about the images and the functionality. The images are the original cartes de visites-sized illustrations (most of them are color, but not all) that were included with the viewer when it was sold new ca. 1865, They're placeholders for photo cdv's and they're secured to the scroll in "pockets" between two strips of paper that comprise the scroll. The images can be easily removed and substituted for photo cdv's, but only the original images are included with the viewer, and these images are illustrations, not photo cdv's. The viewer works simply. By turning the right knob clockwise, it spools from the left. By turning the left knob counter-clockwise, it spools from the right.
