for a detailed view. Suriname Roller. 77 The Roller gets its name from the aerial acrobatics some of these birds perform during courtship or territorial flights. Rollers resemble Crows in size and build, and share the colourful appearance of kingfishers and bee-eaters, blues and pinkish or cinnamon browns predominating. The two inner front toes are connected, but not the outer one. George Edwards was often referred to as 'The Father of British Ornithology.' ...Edwards took great care in etching the original drawings for his work. He personally supervised the coloring in order to assure accuracy in the finished product. Edwards completed over 800 engravings of different subjects that had not yet been illustrated or described. This exquisite work after George Edwards and Mark Catesby drawings entitled The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands was published in Nuremberg between 1749 and 1776. Johann Michael Seligmann issued the nine-volume set of the two artists' works. The collection introduced New World ornithology to European natives and made Seligmann a prominent natural history scholar. Seligmann went through and re-etched most of Catesby and Edwards engravings and added charming scenes to many. The bird names are listed in German, French, and Latin for each plate. Both artists that contributed to the drawing, Edwards & Seligmann, also sign each print.
