The Hawsing Iron was a two man operation. One man would hold the iron on the seam to be caulked while another would pound the caulk home using a wood mallet. The description I read of the work also said that the caulk is initially put in place by a man using the smaller caulking iron. The Hawsing iron is than used to pound it home. Some interesting articles can be found by Googling it. There is no maker name on the iron. It is not worn or damaged, has seen very little use. Was probably made by t...he ships carpenter or blacksmith. The handle is 24" long. The edge is 4".See the shipping tab for shipping options.Questions, comments, concerns. Please contact me.

Antique 19th Century Hand Forged Hawsing Iron. This tool was used in Ship Building to apply caulk between the seams of wood, (mostly on deck seams). A two-man operation, one man would hold the iron while another used a mallet to drive the caulk deep into the seams. It has a rotating head to facilitate use. From what I understand there would be 3 blade thicknesses used (a wide, medium, and thin head). The 3 tools would be used, in order, to drive the caulk deeper and deeper into the seams. This ir...on has the thin blade, as you can see in the picture. The iron has a 22 34" handle. The head is 7" long and 4" wide at the end.Antique Primitive Condition. One chip-off of the blade at one end. Other than that, no other damage to metal. Solid and sturdy with age discoloration as shown in pics.If you have any questions or if you are making an offer (where applicable) please allow time for a response, since I am not online 247.I will ship FedEx Ground or USPS Ground to US addresses. In order to save on shipping charges and be environmentally friendly, I try to use recycled shipping supplies whenever possible. Thanks for looking
