The body/handle of the axe was designed to resemble the sacred marine animal - the Dugong.
Gorgeous dark patina on this very beautiful wood species.....
Condition-wise - it is in very good solid condition for its old 1860 - 70's (possibly o...lder)....Just the period minor age cracks, dents, chips....
Measurements - length of axe 14 inches, tridacna blade is 3.5 inches.....Cabinet card measures 6 inches x 4 inches.
The photograph depicts a group of 11 New Britain Melanesians....THIS IS AN ORIGINAL AND RARE CABINET CARD!.....alone worth about $400....great subject matter!
