Over 200 Corps and Regimental Badges

 (The Original "Dog Tags")
+ + + + + + + + + + +I have been asked to help dispose of a large collection of antique newspapers, maps, engravings, and other paper items, included in which were some Civil War ads for medals and pins, many of which served the function of modern day "dog tags."  I  will not be selling any individual items from this collection, but rather I will be brea...king it up into "lots" made up of many pieces, pricing them cheaply, and in this manner gradually helping to sell the entire collection more quickly and easily than might otherwise be possible. Background:
In modern times, the immediate identification of dead and wounded soldiers on the battlefield has been accomplished primarily by the use of "dog tags, " government-issued metal identification tags (which got their name from their similarity to the animal tags issued by municipal governments). During the Civil War, however, these almost universally employed official military devices had not yet come into existence. Nonetheless, the need for something like them was widely recognized by soldiers, some of whom were in the habit of simply pinning notes to their jackets, on which they had written their names and home addresses, while others carried this information in their knapsacks or even carved it into their belt buckles. By 1863 the market for identification badges had been recognized by various manufacturers, who soon began to advertise such items in popular periodicals. These pins were often shaped to indicate a branch of service or particular corps, and they were usually engraved with the individual soldier's name and unit.

The item offered in this auction is a group of about 140 original illustrated Civil War ads which together have images of over 200 military pins and badges that were being offered for sale. (These have not been "trimmed to size, " but instead are still on the original 15 by 10 inch pages on which they appeared).  Please note that there is a good bit of duplication, but I estimate that there are images of about 75 different badges and pins, and it is probable that these represent all or nearly all of the badge images published in these two major publications during the Civil War.  In addition to various Corps, Regimental and other types of identification badges for soldiers, there are also ads for an Army of the Cumberland badge, a Kearney Cross, and several different varieties of pins.

As noted above, none of these ads have been "cut to size" but instead they have all been left on the original, fully intact large pages on which they were published, along with dozens and dozens of other Civil War ads - some pages have only one ad for badges, others have multiple ads on one page. What is offered here is those pages, 65 fully intact, oversize (15-inch by 10-inch) original pages from Harper's Weekly and Leslie's Illustrated, printed during the years 1863 to 1865 (the corps and regimental badge ads on these pages range in size from about three inches by one inch to six inches by four inches.)

These 65 pages are all in very good condition and will display nicely. Some of the other great ads on these pages include illustrated ads for revolvers and other military goods, and various other nineteenth century products.

A great piece of Civil War memorabilia, particularly for anyone interested in the early "dog tags" that are pictured in these ads.
