MID/LATE 19TH CENTURY HORSE, BIBLE & MOTIF SAMPLER BY ANNA MARIA ALBON - 1875

Mid/late 19th century sampler by Anna Maria Albon aged 14 - 1875. Worked in silk on gauze, this sampler is completely charming with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers, Roman numerals and border patterns with a beehive at the end of the second row of letters and the following biblical quotation and prayer beneath

The middle section of the gauze is stitched with a central oak tree with a variety of motifs on each side. There is a stag standing on each side of the oak tree's trunk with a crown by the left stag and a prancing stag by the right side one. The left side stag has a star motif with an A at its centre, a dog, and square motifs to his side, whist the stag to the right has a bird, floral garland and square motifs by his side. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a central fruit tree with a crown, harp, floral motif and orb to the left of its foliage and a floral motif and crown on the right. The trunk of the tree has a flower, crown, flower basket, bible and a horse very like those on the Bristol samplers to its left and a crown, flower, exotic bird, squirrel and smaller horse to its right. Anna Maria's details and the date of 1875 are stitched across the bottom edges then the whole piece is surrounded by a narrow linked border. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly brown with some faint grubby streaks. The colours of the silks are good with some shades having mellowed more than others over the years. There are also some areas of thinning to the stitch work and bleeding to the darker shades. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Anna Maria first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are a few small areas of damage to the gauze, the one on the right side edge having resulted in some stitch loss to the outer border and less so on the squirrel. I've photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this, but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable. The back of the sampler is also losing some small fibres of silk. There are also visible tack marks around the edges of the gauze from where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time. Measures 13 1/2" x 16"
WITH THE SLIGHT SHEDDING OF FIBRES ON THE BACK OF THE SAMPLER, I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT HANDLING BE KEPT TO A MINIMUM UNTIL THE SAMPLER IS BEHIND GLASS AND FRAMED.
