17672 Country Flame Mahogany Empire Secretary Desk

We are pleased to be offering today this country empire flame mahogany pre-civil war secretary desk that dates from the 1850s era. It is in original as found condition. There are flaws such as minor veneer chips on the desk base, cracked panels from age, tiny pieces of wood missing here and there. It is in good shape considering it is 170 years old. It has the original wavy glass with six pieces in each door. Behind the two glass doors is a shelf interior with a series of drawers goin...g across and below the bookcase section are two drawers with wooden knobs. Someone put Chippendale hardware on the piece which is not correct. The base two drawers on top above the flip down writing surface that is supported with the pullouts and the base itself has three drawers. The top drawer has an ogee molded face and the other two drawers are lip molded. It has flame mahogany pillars on both sides. It is in nice condition given the age. We will show you in the pictures where the solid wood has shrunk and cracked on the right hand side. It has a crown molded double crown top, beehive glass panels on the top of the doors, hand cut dove tails and handmade construction. The overall size is 41.5 inches wide, 20 inches deep at the base, 36 inches high on the base, 40 inches wide on the bookcase section, 10 inches deep on the bookcase section and 75 inches high overall. The most serious damage is on the bottom board of veneer chips. When you want to use it as a writing desk you can pull out the supports, flip down the writing surface to reveal a green felt top you can see where the ink well cover is missing. The size of the writing surface is 41 inches wide, 15 inches deep and 33 inches high when open. There are no keys for the piece. This is a really early piece of New England history for little money.
