Here we have a Rare Antique 18th Century "MORRIS" Boxwood Carpenter's Rule with 2 Slides, 2 Ft. / 2 Fold. I have edited this description due to getting some great info from a fellow Ebayer. The rule is not a navigational rule but a carpenter's rule that can perform many complex functions. If you have Philip Stanley's book: 'Source Book for Rule Collectors', see page 216 for a full description. The rule is marked: MORRIS FECIT*. In La...tin this would mean: "Made by Morris". The maker is probablyWilliam Morris of London, who operated at various addresses from 1771 to 1803. It appears to be made of boxwood. It is much thicker than the average boxwood rule in that it is 5/16" thick vs. 3/16". The rule was made thicker to accommodate 2 slides (one brass & one wood) with the dovetail channels slightly offset (see pic. 12). It also has a small diameter circular brass joint which was probably to accommodate the second slide. This joint is in good working condition. The brass pull-out slide is calibrated on both sides. The wood slide has some damage at the tip where it probable has a brass button to assist in pulling it out. A previous owner fashioned a small wedge to secure the slide. After you remove the wedge you need to push it out from the other end. The overall condition of the Boxwood and Brass is Good with typical wear, nicks and scratches. The boxwood has a very nice aged patina. All of the graduations and numbers are clear and dark. There are 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4" scales; tables marked: IN MERID, CHORDS, LATITUDES, HOURS ( these scale were include so you could layout sundials !!); and scales for POLYGONS. There are also calibrations on the outside edge surfaces of the rule. The 2 alignment pins are present. The legs line up as they should. There is some minor edge bowing of the rule. No owners marks. No additional cracks. **Please remember to leave Feedback. I will gladly reciprocate. :-)
