Approx. 10" hand carved wooden woman and child doll portrayed in a traditional work setting that was designed and made by the late Richard and Berdina Crowe in Cherokee, North Carolina c pre 2000. The bottom of the doll's wooden base is signed Richard and Berdina Crowe Cherokee, N.C." Online research reveals that Richard and Berdina Crowe were Cherokee Indians who were passionate about teaching Cherokee culture to tourists and at schools, festivals and powwows. Richar...d carved the wooden dolls, while his wife Berdina dressed the dolls in traditional Cherokee clothing. Cherokee woman is pounding corn into meal, while her child is cradled on her back inside a woolen plaid scarf. Cherokee woman's face is has beautifully carved features, while baby's face is more simply presented. Her black hair is braided thickly from wool. Cherokee Woman & child are in EXCELLENT condition. I believe it is referred to as a Ka-no-na Doll & is highly valued treasure created by revered Native American artists. I understand that Richard and Berdina Crowe's work has been displayed in museums.
