Here we have an 18thC violin bearing the label of Francois Fent, made in Paris. Some say they cannot see much French in this violin but we have to remember that he was German with the family name Fendt but he dropped the ‘d’ when he moved to France to make it seem more French.
He was arguably the founder of the Fendt dynasty of violin makers workin...g in London, Paris and their ancestral Innesbruck in Tyrol.
This violin comes with no papers but I feel strongly that it’s the real deal dating to his later period i.e. c1790. The label is clearly of the period and has no date which is typical of Francois.
The violin is set up and in playing condition. It has some repaired cracks in the table and a replacement button but there are no post cracks.
The arching is on the flat side which contributes to its carrying power.
The modern neck is grafted to the original pegbox using the more difficult but technically superior ‘five cut’ procedure also known as French cut.
