Original Description:
Early 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Sarah Sykes aged 10 - 1828. This sampler is just delightful with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with the following verse which has flowers, a bird, butterfly and fruit basket on either side
A VERSESee the kind shepherd Jesus standsWith all engaging charmsHark how he calls his tender lambsAnd folds them in his arms
There is a central plaque beneath the verse containing Sarah's details and th...e date of 1828 then flanked by a flower basket and floral urn, a bird stands above each flower basket. The middle section of the linen is stitched with a central Tree of Knowledge, complete with entwined serpent and Adam and Eve standing beneath its fruit laden branches, the upper parts of the foliage with a strawberry to the left and right. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a charming scene of a two storey red house which has an oak tree on either side, each with a plump bird standing on top flanked by a star and fruit basket. There is a stretch of grass in front of the house with railings around the side, each set with a flower basket and squirrel above. The grass is occupied with various animals - a large lion, sheep, rabbits and cockerels - all overseen by a farmer and his wife. Both figures hold a crook in their hand and their dogs stand nearby. The top and side edges of the linen are then stitched with a deep honeysuckle border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with some light creasing and a small area of damage on the lower left side edge and top right corner. The colours of the thread are good with some bleeding to the stitch work of the verse and that inside the name plaque and also to some of the dark green stitching. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Sarah first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are visible tack marks and some minor damage around the edges of the linen from where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time.PLEASE NOTE - This is a fairly large sampler measuring 19 3/4" x 21 1/2"
I FOUND THIS SAMPLER DIFFICULT TO PHOTOGRAPH AND MY PHOTOS DO NOT DO JUSTICE TO THIS WONDERFUL PIECE OF NEEDLEWORK.
