Original Description:
This is a complete, functional IMSAI 8080 system, serial number 8837. It was purchased from the original owner, who ordered and hand assembled it from a kit in 1978. It was well optioned, with 24KB of RAM, serial interface, and a disk controller. It was initially used with a monitor and parallel (via IMSAI MIO) keyboard, but the owner soon traded in this hardware to upgrade to an ADM-3A serial terminal.  The original bills of sale and receipts for all this hardware ...are included, showing a total purchase price of $3948; equivalent to nearly $15, 000 today. The Northstar Micro-Disk System and controller are a particularly interesting option for the time. The Micro-Disk System was one of the very first complete 5.25” drive systems priced within reach of hobbyists. It is a hard sectored, single-sided/single-density drive storing about 90KB. The Shugart drive in this system is a very early model with a low serial number, #100081. The original Northstar DOS disk is included.
The system used for a number of years before being carefully stored. It was never altered or upgraded further, and remains in its original 1978 configuration. It is in full working condition, booting and running CP/M 2.0.
The following has been performed on all hardware:-All connections cleaned-All socketed IC's pulled, cleaned and reseated-Wiring checked over-Chassis completely disassembled -Inner and outer surfaces cleaned-Caps examined for leakage-Hardware configuration checked and verified according to documentation
All boards were removed from the IMSAI, and it was powered up gradually on a Variac. The power supply was then tested for the correct voltage/amperage. Once verified, cards were installed, slowly powered up and tested one at a time. Then only problems encountered were 3x faulty 2102 SRAM chips, which were replaced. After being fully powered on and configured, the system was in stable condition. It was then function tested according the guidelines found in the IMSAI 8080 user's manual (page 34). These programs verify operation of the processor/memory. The system passed these tests successfully. The ADM-3A was brought up and tested in a similar fashion. The display is bright and free of burn-in. The DIP switch settings were checked and set using the included ADM service manual. Finally, the disk drive was completely disassembled, cleaned and lubricated. The belt is in good order, and the pulleys spin freely. It was then tested according to the MDS user's manual (not included, but available online). Motor and sector position sensor functions were verified. Finally, the drive PROM was accessed at location E900 and the drive was observed to spin up and step through all tracks.CP/M boots and appears to be functioning normally. My testing of the disks was limited to one of the less vital ones. I have not tested the master system disks, as I do not have the necessary tools to properly back them up nor any spare hard-sectored disks to make duplicates. They are in good condition, but given their advanced age I don't want to risk damaging them.

Cosmetic ConditionThe IMSAI 8080 is in very good condition, with some minor scratches to the top cover and back panel. The front panel is also in very good order, with all LED's and switches working correctly. And yes, I am aware the top cover is installed backwards in the photos! The ADM-3A is in very good condition, with minor wear to the outside casing. It is missing the front DIP-switch cover. There is some speckling on the front glass around the edges of the screen, a common problem on older CRT's that does not affect function. The internals are in excellent condition. The Northstar disk drive is in excellent shape with almost no wear showing on the outside surfaces. The drive door functions as it should, and is not loose or broken. The included documentation is generally in good condition, with the receipts and IMSAI manual showing the most wear. The disks are in similarly good condition, with no obvious defects or deterioration.

ShippingEbay is inflexible when it comes to multiple irregular packages, so the amount listed for shipping is a placeholder. You may need to pay more, depending on where you are located. If the shipping is less than the listed amount, you will be refunded the difference.I am willing send this system anywhere in the world, and will work with the buyer to arrange shipping and insurance. I am not looking to profit on shipping costs, I want it to arrive safely as much as you do. The lot will divided into 2 boxes and packed at my cost. Please bear in mind that it is heavy and bulky, so shipping costs may be high.
The IMSAI 8080 will be shipped with the switch paddles removed, to prevent damage. The ADM-3A's CRT will be properly supported to prevent breakage of the chassis during transit, and the disk drive will have a head protector installed before packing. While this system is currently in good working order and I have done my best to test and describe it, it is sold as-is due to it's advanced age. This is 41 year old hardware; it may have problems, faults, or not work as expected. Once shipped, the bidder assumes all responsibility damage, as I cannot control what happens to the item once it is with the shipping company, or how it is unpacked.
Once again, if you have any questions, or would like additional photos, please do not hesitate to contact me.
