HISTORYImmediately after the war, there was strong demand in the U.S. for Leitz equipment, but due to WW2, grave limitations in the supply coming from Wetzlar, Germany.
Between 1945 and early 1950, Leitz New York mitigated this problem ...by producing three lens designs branded "E. Leitz, Inc. New York." They were a 50mm, this 90mm and a 127mm. The respected American manufacturer Wollensak produced the optical components, while Leitz New York fabricated the mounts, and handled distribution and marketing.
I am selling my collection of all three of these lenses, plus other Leitz New York-branded equipment from the immediate postwar period.
This 90mm Wollensak lens, code LEXXC, had only a short production run. It was replaced in 1950 by the 9cm, f/1.4 Elmar ELANG.
CONDITION1945-50 LEICA WOLLENSAK 90mm VELOSTIGMAT SCREWMOUNT f/4.5 LENS, with front/rear caps, Leitz N.Y. red box and 1951 Leitz New York brochure.
Condition is about Excellent ++ on this lens. The chrome barrel parts are bright, and show virtually no wear. There's a trace of wear on the black edge just below the iris scale, and very slight paint wear, hardly noticeable, on the lower part of the focus scale.
Glass is clear, no fungus, no haze, no cleaning marks on either front or rear elements.
Focus and iris operate smoothly, and there is no oil showing on the iris blades. Both caps are metal, good condition, the front cap shows just a little wear on the chrome. The Leitz red box has corner splits, box and box top, one of which repaired. Otherwise it's in very good shape. A nice touch is the original price tag, which was $115.50, equivalent to $1, 250 today.
The March 1959 6-page Brochure is in excellent condition, no damage or tears, showing the Leica Ic, IIf and IIIf, and the then-current lenses.
VALUECollectiblend gives a range of $360 - $380 for this lens in mint condition
