Artist Biography: Howard Nelson is an accomplished, self-taught Navajo silversmith. He was born in 1951 in Winslow, Arizona and is of the Tsinnijinnie clan. His style of contemporary appliqués overlay jewelry has garnered numerous awards including ribbons at the Annual Intertribal Ceremonial in Gallup, New Mexico and the Santa Fe Market.
Howard Nelson’s jewelry is sold at a handful of Trading Posts in the southwest. Owners have become accustomed to receiving a new piece on a monthly or bi-monthly basis, as Nelson is known for his slow and deliberate approach to his craft. That means his work is very labor and time intensive. When you look at his jewelry you immediately notice the work is flawless. Howard begins his pieces with collectable stones, ones that only make the silver better, and then decorates them with his incredible overlay patterns.
Howard's work is very popular in Japan so most of his pieces are quickly purchased and sent abroad, so finding them in the US is uncommon. Make sure you don't miss the opportunity to own some of the best silver and stone being made.
