Because I'm the only fisherman left in the family, years ago my grandfather gave me all of his rods, including a lot of bamboo rods in metal tubes. At least 20 years later I finally decided to see what's in these tubes, and one that stood out the most was this E.F. Payne rod. It's 7' long, 2 piece with one tip. The tip is exactly the same length as the lower section. It has, what appears to be,... the original tube and cloth (2 slots). The rod looks barely fished, as my modern rods even after a few trips look worse than this, and this thing's probably over 50 years old!
From the Abercrombie and Fitch catalog in 1964:
Payne two-piece Fly Rods. Have plain reel seat. Single tip.
7-ft. 2 5/8 to 3 ozs.
On the very banks of the New York streams where brown trout were first introduced to America. Payne rods have set the standards by which all others are judged for 71 years. These rods are painstakingly made by hand. The split tonkin cane is carefully selected so that nodes are staggered for additional resiliency and durability. Uniformly perfect joints are the result of precision-cutting and hand-filing. Ferrules are hand-drawn from nickel-silver, oxidized to reduce light reflection; working parts are made of lightweight aluminum. grips are hand-cut solid cork, guides are bronzed tungsten steel. Finished in a deep brown color, comes with an aluminum case.
