Item History & Price

Information:
Reference Number: Avaluer:64983
Original Description:
Mid 19th century sampler by Elizebeth Seaton. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1840. Worked in a lustrous thread on gauze, this sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with a central birdhouse with five birds perched on it and a tree behind fencing to the left side. A man and his wife with their dogs stand on each side of the house, the wife with a bird perched on her hand... whilst her husband leans on a tall staff. There is at the side of the wife with a flying insect and star above her, whilst her husband has an open tailed peacock standing on a fence to his side followed by a dog and rose. He also has a flying insect and star above him with a bird on a blossom branch to their right side. The middle section of the gauze is stitched with an exquisite floral archway supported by a pillar on either side, each with a tulip urn on top. There is a flying insect by each of the urns and a bird at the base of each pillar. The archway surrounds the following verse which is underlined with a floral border with Elizebeth's name below
Soon shall I pass the gloomy valeSoon all my mortal power must failO may my last expiring breathHis loving kindness sing in deathThen let me mount and soar awayTo the bright world of endless dayAnd sing with rapture and surpriseHis loving kindness in the skiesElizebeth Seaton
The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a central oak tree with a dog standing on either side of its trunk and a flying insect on each side of its foliage. There is a stag and dog to the left of the tree and a man leaning on his gun and a dog its right. There is a bird standing on a blossom branch in each of the lower corners with a flower and fruit basket on either side of the bird to the left and a squirrel eating a nut and a flower on either side of the bird to the right. The whole piece is then surrounded by a strawberry border. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker around the edges and the colours of the thread are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Elizebeth first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are visible tack marks around the edges of the gauze from where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher at some point of time.PLEASE NOTE - This is a fairly large sampler measuring 22 1/4" across x 21 1/4"
