Original Description:
Early 19th century sampler by Ann Hargate aged 9 years & 7 months - 1824. Worked in both wool and silk on gauze, this sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout, the moreso when one considers Ann wasn't even ten years old when she completed it. The middle section of the gauze is stitched with a splendid rendition of a front view of Solomon's Temple with railings to the front and a stag and two trees down either side. "A Front view of Solomon's Temple" i...s stitched above the temple with a central crown beneath flanked by a lion rampant, all underlined with an acorn border which has a bird in flight on either side. The tallest tower of the temple has two floral motifs on either side, a bird standing on the outermost one with a fruit tree basket by their side. The lower section of the gauze is divided by a decorative black line with the following verse on either side underlined with a meandering floral border
Still for thy loving kindness LordI in thy temple waitI look to find thee in thy wordOr at thy table meetHere in thine own appointed waysI wait to learn thy willSilent I stand before thy faceAnd hear thee say "Be still"
Ann's details are stitched beneath the verse - Ann Hargate finished this work Dec 13 1824. Aged 9 Years Seven Months - then the whole piece is surrounded by a deep floral border .The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker around the edges, and the colours of the thread are good with some small areas of stitch loss in the outer border. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Ann first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are visible tack marks around the edges from where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time. PLEASE NOTE - This is a fairly large sampler measuring 22 1/2" across x 21 1/2"
