Marbled edges.Edition: FIRST EDITIONPrinting: 1st Printing Description:First Edition, First Printing of J.R.R. Tolkien's Masterpiece, The Hobbit or There and Back Again, beautifully illustrated. Presenting in its original slipcase. A very nice First Printing of this special collec...tor's edition. When Tolkien's revolutionary 'The Hobbit' arrived on bookshelves in 1937, it redefined fantasy and introduced the genre to a new audience. Some consider it to have been the Harry Potter of the time.  With the success of the first printing, the publishers decided to incur the costs of printing color illustrations in the second printing which Tolkien produced himself. The text of the first edition was also changed by the second edition to align with the story of The Lord of the Rings, soon to be published. The popularity was so great that his publisher requested a new series and thus The Lord of the Rings came about. Condition:Book binding tight and square. Original faux leather boards present very well with only light wear to hinges and moderate loss of title to spine. Internally Fine but for gift inscription to about one-quarter front endpaper and a couple faint spots to top right corner of contents page. Slipcase presents fairly well.  Wear to front edges, mostly at corners but for one moderate scrape to right front edge toward head. Ink spots mostly to front barely impacting illustrated paper. A very nice example of this "First Printing" Collector's Edition. A Classic:A classic work considered by many to be amongst the best, including The Adventures of Augie March by Saul Bellow, All the King’s Men by Robert Penn Warren, American Pastoral by Philip Roth, An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser, Animal Farm by George Orwell, Appointment in Samarra by John O'Hara, Are You There God?
