Batey's was established in 1853 and produced their drinks from a factory in Kingsland Road, London.The sign has the usual enamel losses and nibbles to the edges, there is also a hole by the 'Y' of quality and there is a little damage at the bottom to the metal below the sign makers, "Chromo, Wolverhampton", as well as the usual scuffs, disco...louration and scratches that you would expect from an item of this age and use. This rare conversation tube was manufacured by "Ardente" of 309, Oxford St, London, W. 1."It is more unusual than most as it has an "earphone" style end rather than an ear tip.This earphone is nickel plated with a 'faux' tortoise shell celluloid insert, this has no breaks or splits and has retained a good colour.It is impressed with "Ardente, 309, Oxford St., W.1." this is also impressed in to the bell. This is attached to an ebonized wooden handle.The tube is plaited cotton over rubber and the... bell is made from hard rubber.There are no splits or breaks to the cotton and the hard rubber and bell have no cracks or chips. The bell also has the makers details.I have tried to show this in the photographs.It measures 97 cm (38 inches) long and the bell is 5.5 cm (2 14 inches) wide.
