Small early/mid 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Eliza Wors. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1840 or slightly earlier. This little sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper and middle sections of the linen are stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns, all underlined with a deep floral border. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central fruit with a bird s...tanding to its left and right and the words O Remember thy Creator above which have a tree on either side. There is a framework beneath the fruit basket containing Eliza's name with a tulip vase on either side and a bird beneath, a small dog to his left and right. The whole piece is then surrounded by a neat floral border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places and the colours of the silks are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Eliza first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are a few small areas of damage to both the edges and the field of the linen. I've photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this, but once on a similar coloured backing cloth the damage would be less noticeable.
