While this old note is not going to win any beautycompetitions and is certainly not an investment grade piece, it is an authenticpiece of “history you can hold in your hand” that represents a physicalconnection to an important and turbulent time in the history of Texas and theUnited States. These notes were printed during a brief period of time afterTexas successfully fought a war of independence from Mexic...o and became anindependent country on March 2, 1839 until annexation by the United States onFebruary 19, 1846. Because almost all Republic of Texas currency were recalledand redeemed for US currency when Texas became a state, all Republic of Texas notesare scarce to rare today and retail from between $400.00-$500.00 today. Theearliest notes such as these, which bear the title “Government of Texas” wereminted in 1837 during the war of independence (before Texas actually declaredindependence) are the most hard to find.While this note has had a hard life (think what we are allgoing to look like in 180+ years) and has both water damage and has been taped backtogether (after being cut cancelled and redeemed like almost all Texas notes), it is the most affordable example of Republic of Texas currency on eBay and isan excellent example of early Republic of Texas paper money from a “lost” or“dead” nation that minted no coins.This note would make a great low cost addition to any Texascurrency collection or a cool gift to any Texas history buff, or even as apresent to a little kid looking for something cool for show and tell or aschool project.
