Antique Japanese Nippon Moriage Bowl Vase Unmarked Pre-1891Hand made, hand painted, ribbed, moriage vase in beautiful condition. No chips, no cracks, no breaks, no repairs.Nippon is a generic term used to describe Japanese export wares shipped to Europe and the United States between late 1891 and 1921.In October 1891, the United States Congress passed the McKinley Tariff Act. One of the provisions reads: “All articles of foreign manufacture, be stamped, branded or labeled and a...ll packages containing such of their imported articles shall, respectively be marked, stamped, branded or labeled in legible English words as to indicate the country of their origin; and unless so marked stamped, branded or labeled they shall not be admitted entry.”Japan is an English designation. The Japanese call their homeland Nippon. Hence, Nippon rather than Japan appeared on Japanese export goods from 1891 through 1921. In 1921, the government concluded that Nippon is a Japanese word without an English equivalent. A new law was passed requiring goods imported from Japan be marked “Japan.”As this particular item is unmarked, it would seem that it was made before the McKinley Tariff Act went into effect. It is obviously hand blown, and definitely beautiful. I love the way it feel in my hand. I'll have to admit, I'm hooked on Nippon moriage. Measurements: 3.5"H x 4.5 Diameter
