Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:59974577 | Composition: Sterling Silver |
This is a really finally detailed souvenir sterling silver spoon by the master silversmith and craftsman Eugene L deacon. It has different scenes of industry on the back which you can see close up in the photos as well as a donkey in the bowl of the spoon talking about being part of the construction on the railroad. This states to the early 1900s probably around 1910 to 1915 and has a lot of... wonderful age patina on it. As for the triple symbol at the top of the spoon it was an often used symbol of divinity and spirituality. In the southwest, it was a symbol of auspiciousness and good luck first used by Native Americans as the whirling log symbol and later used in many souvenirs and silver works, up until the 1930’s. It fell out of popularity after that, for obvious reasons and because the US government requested that both Navajo artisans and other people using the symbol stop stamping it or carving it into any merchandise for sale.
The Three scenes on the Back of handle - Bucking horse, cattle raising, plowing, mine & shaft.
This is an amazing piece of history of turn of the century America and a wonderful piece of craftsmanship as well

Spoons like this were sold in trading posts throughout the American southwest starting with the Fred Harvey company who created stores and restaurants along the railroad lines in the early 1930s. those trading posts including famous ones like Bell trading post and Maisels commissioned Native American artists to make jewelry and other souvenir items out of silver copper and turquoise. These silver spoons are very popular amongst tourists and stationed army men to bring back home. The Eugene l deacon company was famous for their finely detailed collector spoons And this one is especially collectible because of the whirling lock symbol which both dates it and also is quite hard to find..
