Up for auction is a complete WhitallTatum Co. specimen jar with lid and iron clamp. The clamps rarelysurvive. The jar is one of the older style museum jars based on their1861 patent used on their Millville Atmospheric Fruit Jars. The jar has rounded shoulders with an appliedlip to which the lid is tightened down with the metal clamp. The jar w/clamp stands approx. 8" highand just the jar without clamp and lid is approx. 6”. The jar is 4 1/2”wide at the... base and at the top. The internal diameter of the mouth ofthe jar is slightly over 3 1/2". The jar holds approx. 40 ounces when filled upto the lip. The base of the jar ispontiled. The clamp has external rust as shown in the photos but still operatesfreely. I have not tried to clean the rust in any way. The lip ofthe jar is not in perfect condition. There are a few very small chipsaround the edge of the lip and there are several larger chips. One is 1 inch long and has a smaller 1/4 inchlong chip to the left. The second largechip is 1/2 inch long and has a smaller chip to the left that is just over 1/4inch long. The third large chip is justover 1/3 inch long. I have takenpictures to show these 5 chips. Whatlooks like a crack in the picture of the second chip is a manufacturing flawfrom the attachment of the lip. The lid has WHITHALL TATUM & Co.PHILADELPHIA NEW YORK embossed on it and has one flange to tie a specimen. Thelid has one very small chip on the outer edge and one tiny ding on the innerflange. I have taken plenty of pictures soplease look at them carefully and contact me with any questions or concerns. The jar will be packaged very carefully with the jar, lid and clamp packedseparately to assure no damage.
