The fabled Umbilia eximia (Sowerby, 1845) from the Middle Miocene layers of Victoria, Australia, is an extraordinary taxon with a highly variable shell morphology. As such, it has been assigned various taxonomic names, both at subspecies and species level. Of these, the name frankstonensis (which I here choose to use as a form name, but it has also been used as subspecies names of eximia and brevis, see Darragh [2002]), refers to the morphotype that has coarser columellar teeth not... extending as far onto the columellar side. This form is a much rarer form than the 'traditional' eximia. To illustrate this distinct dentition, I have shown the specimen side by side with a traditional eximia form, where the differences are readily observable. Please note that the fossil to the right is not included in this offering.
The piece on offer is a stunningly preserved fossil - entirely natural, and free of any structural damage - in other words, close to perfection. Apart from a few rusty areas, it is alabaster white and with a high degree of natural polish. There is a slight indentation on the anterior dorsum (please see photos for more information), and some very minor erosion 'pin pricks' in places (I have yet to see a perfect eximia without any kind of erosion or blemish - there simply is no 'gem' 15-16 million year-old fossil), but overall the condition is absolutely extraordinary. An elegant, beautiful shell of great rarity, suitable for an advanced collection. Comes with full data. Happy bidding!
