Hester Bateman 9 pc Sterlingand glass Cruet SetMade by HesterBateman Made in London 1788An Outstanding Georgian rare 9 PCSterling and glass Cruet set and stand, LONDON, 1788, by famed SilversmithHESTER BATEMAN. Thisrare set features the fine craftsmanship of Hester Bateman (1708-1794) , one ofthe only women silversmiths of her time. Shesuccessfully ran her family business for 30 years following the death of herhusband. Theeight sided boat shaped baske...t is decorated with openwork and engravinghighlighting the artistry that made Bateman famous. Thebasket is supported by four ball and claw feet anda wooden base. Thisset features Eight cut glass bottles, each with sterling silver caps or spoutsor cut glass stoppers. It is very rare to find an eight bottle set, most arefive or six.There aretwo Ewers, two Shakers and four additional bottles. All of the bottles arehallmarked on the silver. Twoof the bottles are topped with perforated caps, two with sprouts while the restare topped with cut glass fitted stoppers. Theoutside of the basket is marked with the Bateman signature. This pieceis 9-1/4"(H), 8" X 5" Thecondition is good considering the age the delicacy and daily use of an itemlike this.Thebottles are in very good condition with only a few minor blemishes and only onemajor chip on one of the lesser bottles.Thehandle, feet and base are solid.The mainbody has the following issues, some of the intertwined ribbon work and crossesare missing or have been repaired at some point. Some of the crosses aremissing either left or right side. I count about 5 places with small area ofmissing ribbon and missing crosses, about a dozen crosses replaced. Themain body is very nice with only one small area with restoration. The lastpicture shows this area along with a good example the restored or missingcrosses.Overallthe piece presents well since the ribbon and crosses are so small.The Piece has severalhallmarks including the HB of Hester Bateman.
