OUR GANG FOLLIES OF 1936 (Hal Roach, 1935). The first of the hugely successful Our Gang musicals, which M-G-M released annually as special attractions. Junior showman Spanky McFarland is putting on a big show with “6 Acts of Swell Actin.” In the best tradition of P. T. Barnum he’s his own barker, standing outside his “theater” and giving the crowd a preview of the variety show they’ll see inside. Laurel & Hardy fans will recognize the song “Honolulu Bab...y” accompanying a pint-sized trio of hula dancers, and Our Gang fans will recognize series alumni Jerry Tucker and Leonard Kibrick, making guest appearances as skeptical patrons. Backstage, Buckwheat Thomas and Porky Lee are tending to the footlights, Scotty Beckett, Dickie Jones, and Sid Kibrick are stagehands, and a mischievous monkey is running loose! The revue acts, in order, are 1) an all-girl, amateur chorus line kick-dancing to “Good Morning, Teacher”; 2) the Three Brian Sisters (in their film debut) singing their charming, close-harmony version of “How Ya Gonna Keep ’Em Down on the Farm?”; 3) Darla Hood, not quite four years old but showing amazing poise in her very first film, singing “I’ll Never Say Never Again Again”; 4) a quintet of “skeleton” dancers; 5) Joy Wurgaft and Alfalfa Switzer sharing a vocal on Pinky Tomlin’s hit song “The Object of My Affection”; and 6) “The Flory-Dory Sixtette.” Unfortunately the Flory-Dory girls haven’t arrived yet, so Spanky takes charge and has his all-male crew climb into the costumes, with orders to do exactly as he does. The monkey is still loose, and you can guess the rest! One of the best Our Gang shorts, with plenty of music and laughs. Running time: 18 minutes. This print is retitled LITTLE RASCALS FOLLIES, the 1951 theatrical reissue by Monogram Pictures. Former rental print (1963 Kodak) in very good condition. Like many films that saw rental service, there was damage at the very beginning: one splice in the titles and one in the establishing shot, with scattered emulsion stains in the first minute and a half. From then on, the film is in great shape, with only a couple of benign splices, a brief hairline scratch toward the end, and two splices at the theatrical end title. The print’s only crime was being mishandled at both ends during its rental career. Again, the overwhelming majority of the film is just fine, with all the songs and gags intact, making our opening price a real bargain for comedy fans and collectors on a budget.
