Up for Auction is a very rare Collins & Hartford Seagrave pattern fireman's axe. These were produced around the turn of the century, and were specifically used on Seagrave Fire Engines at the Los Angeles Fire Department. There is very little of the Maker's Mark (stamp) left. As old as it is, it has probably seen lots... of use and been polished several time over the course of it's life, leaving little of the stamp visible. A previous Owner has stamped their initials into it.
Please see pictures for condition and details... I've Included a pic of another Seagrave for reference to the original stamp. There is also a zoomed in picture of what's left of the stamp on the axe in the listing.
The head is one of the smaller versions. Head weight is 3 lb 14 oz. It was probably a 4 lb head originally, but lost a few ounces due to the polishings it's received over the years. It has been hung on a beautiful 33.5" vintage hickory handle. This is a nice custom fit, and will take years more use and abuse, or make a nice wall hanger/ display piece.
This axe has not been sharpened. It still has a good edge, but with it being a collector's piece, I didn't want to disturb any patina. I will leave that choice to the buyer.
Happy Bidding!! NO RESERVE!!!!!
